Learning-Focused Connecting Strategies (Version 7)

Description: This is part 1 of 3 for the Learning-Focused Instructional Strategies Model workshop for teachers. Administrators that have not attended should participate in order to monitor and provide support. Learn the framework for planning and delivering essential practices, skills, knowledge, and resources. This workshop includes: the big picture of Learning-Focused and the importance of connecting strategies, the EATS Acquisition lesson framework, and essential practice strategies.

Learning-Focused Connecting Extending Thinking (Version 7)
prerequisite: Connecting Strategies
(Previously Known as Day 3 of Learning-Focused)

Day: Monday, February 2nd
Audience: All   Grades: K-12
Presenter: Barbara McSwain
Description: This is part 2 of 3 for the Learning-Focused Instructional Strategies Model workshop for teachers. Administrators that have not attended should participate in order to monitor and provide support. Connecting Extending Thinking merges the EATS Acquisition lesson framework and Student Learning Maps with Extending Thinking lessons and activities. Extending thinking is a crucial exemplary practice for increasing student achievement. The Learning-Focused framework makes planning and implementing extending thinking lessons and activities consistently and pervasively practical and realistic!

Catching Kids Up with Acceleration
Day: Monday, February 2nd
Audience: All   Grades: All
Presenter: Carol Gardner
Description: Our acceleration model simply “catches kids up” like nothing you have seen or implemented. Participants learn about the different acceleration implementation possibilities, how exemplary acceleration strategies and practices are developed, and the most effective solutions for implementing an acceleration schedule. Don’t just remediate – accelerate!

Vocabulary Development for Language Arts
Day: Monday, February 2nd    
Audience: English/Language Arts teachers   Grades: 2-12
Presenter: Cindy Riedl
Description: This solution provides vocabulary development connections to reading and language arts and language arts instructional strategies for grades 2-12. Vocabulary Development in Language Arts produces vocabulary and language development competencies as defined by state standards for reading and language arts. Provides extensive use of word analysis and context connections, tools to help learners internalize and recall information, strategies for using differentiating practices, and effective vocabulary instruction for a wide range of student abilities. All students will overcome language deficiencies with the emphasis on vocabulary and language development. Teachers select from a variety of research-based strategies that makes the content more accessible for at-risk learners.

School-Based Coaches Training
Day:
Monday, February 2nd and Tuesday, February 3rd    
Audience: Lead Teachers and Administrators   Grades: All
Presenter: Debbie Cargill
Description: School-Based Coaches focus on helping teachers to become more effective in the classroom. Even if a school does not have a full time person allocated to this position, it is important for sustaining continuous improvement goals that someone (a lead teacher, reading specialist, ILT, etc…) who is not in a supervisory role to become a School-Based Coach in each school. This session includes:  Research supporting School-Based Coaches, the 3 roles of a School-Based Coach, the Strategies and Skills to be an effective School-Based Coach, Planning for Success, and Development of a Learning-Focused Mentor.

Scaffolding Grade Level Learning
Day: Monday, February 2nd    
Audience: Special Ed, Resource, All    Grades: All
Presenter: Carolyn Boyles
Description: This solution presents scaffolding strategies that are effective with diverse learners whose grade level achievement is below grade placement. Scaffold for students in special education, students at risk due to economic or language barriers and other students who have gaps or deficits in their achievement. Enable diverse students to learn their grade level content. Success stories of schools and districts whose special subgroups have achieved AYP will be shared.

Learning-Focused Math K-6
Day:

Description: Designed for K-6 math teachers that have participated in the Learning-Focused workshop, this workshop assists math teachers with implementing the model most effectively.  Learn about the interlocking pieces of our math model: comprehension, problem solving, skill building, and authentic use. Teachers walk through many lesson and unit examples, and learn the key elements of a Learning-Focused math lesson.

Comprehensive Literacy Model K-6

Description: Comprehensive Literacy: A Learning-Focused Model for integrating exemplary literacy components is an important resource for all language arts teachers. Learn how exemplary schools implement comprehensive literacy models that connects the key components perfectly. Components include teacher-directed instruction, flexible grouping instruction, self-selected, word work, writing, lit teams, fluency, and instructional strategies for literacy.

Reading Assignments for All Teachers K-5

Description: Learn to design and provide reading assignments that deepen comprehension and increase learning and achievement. Using the reading comprehension framework all teachers will become experts at developing and giving students reading assignments that teach and use comprehension strategies. This session makes it easy for you to get students reading your content and demonstrating complete comprehension!

Description: National award winning model! Recognized by the US DOE for success in teaching reading. A framework to teach reading that enables all students to learn to read, and most importantly, understand what they read. Outlines how to structure a class into flexible groups, and how to break the class into groups for reading, writing, and word study.  Identifies different stages in reading, problems in reading, and gives activities to overcome the problem, or move the student to another reading level.

Training of Trainers Sessions
Learning-Focused Instructional Strategies Model Training of Trainers (Version 7) 
This session is 5 Days (Monday, February 2nd - Friday, February 6th)

Description: After you have attended a regular Learning-Focused workshop (prior to this institute) you are eligible to attend this Learning-Focused Training of Trainers Institute session. This session provides you with the materials (script, notes, presentation, and more) to be able to redeliver the 4-day Learning-Focused Model in your school or district for 24 months. This 5 day training is rigorous, incorporating practice in redelivering the content, evaluating lessons and units, and conferencing. Potential trainers should feel confident in their content knowledge prior to registering for this session.

Catching Kids Up with Acceleration Training of Trainers

This session provides you with the materials (script, notes, presentation, and more) to be able to redeliver the 1-day Catching Kids Up Model in your school or district for 24 months.
